Tryon Bay Park West Trial Period

Tryon Park SignNo matter what side of the fence you are on on the topic of shared-use trails, it is great to see so many people taking interest in our parks. The county has taken a park that was abandoned and really a place where a lot of not-so-great activity was going on and started to transform it into a park that people will feel safe to come out and enjoy. The best part is that the park is walking distance for so many city residents and I am sure they will enjoy it as well as take care of it. The parking lot is just beautiful and the new sign that marks the entrance makes you feel Tryon Park has been revitalized.

On Tuesday July 27th, the new parking lot was the meeting point for the first workshop scheduled by the county to review plans for shared-use trails in Tryon and West Bay Park. Tom Robinson, Larry Staub, Dave Rindaldo from the country parks department were on hand to talk about the plans for the parks and the trial period for shared-use trails. GROC board members Rick Williams and Russ Wait were there to lend a hand to talk about sustainable trail building practices including the tools and best practices when constructing trails.

Tryon Park Workshop
The workshop had a huge turnout filling the new parking lot and overflowing into Tryon street for parking; by our count there were at least 42 hikers, bikers, and trail enthusiasts in one of the groups that were walking the trails talking about trail building techniques and some of the plans for improving and maintaining the trails to support shared-use.

If you missed the Tryon Work Shop please join in on the Irondequoit Bay Park West Field Workshop -- August 5, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Meet at the parking area on Bay Front South, west of the Irondequoit Bay Fish and Game Club.)

GROC submitted proposals for Tryon and Bay Park West during the input sessions. The plans where then reviewed by the Monroe County Parks Advisory Committee (PAC) on THURSDAY, July 15.

The plans GROC submitted covered 3 elements:

1. Trail Development: Process & Standards- PDF

2. Proposal for Irondequoit Bay Park West and Tryon Park- PDF

3. GROC Proposed Trail Maps:

September 3rd 2010 marks the official start of the Shared-use Pilot Program for Tryon and West Bay.
written by Jon Brown, September 05, 2010
There are many things to be done before the Parks are official opened to legal riding but it is going to happen this year.

Today with the permission of the Monroe County Parks department GROC was able to flag potential trail in Tryon and West Bay.

Let me say this again, we are flagging legal mountain bike trails in Monroe County Parks!

This is the first time in the history of the parks that this has been done legally

GROC will be working with the Monroe County Parks to plan and mark trail as well as make recommendations on other needed projects within both parks. The Parks department has assigned Dave Rinaldo to lead the project.

Official work days will be posted by the Parks Department in the next 1 to 2 weeks.

GROC will be putting notice up on our web site as well as emails through our volunteer email list.
If you are not on the volunteer list please register so you will get notified of work days and projects.

This is a a huge accomplishment and we want to thank all the people who helped to support the effort. This has been a 4 year project and we all should be very proud of what has been done. We also need to thank supporters from the legislature and the Monroe County Parks. Without these people behind this effort it would not have happened. They really deserve our thanks.

Larry Staub, Dave Rinaldo, Dan Quatro, Debbie Draw, Carmen Gumina, Tom Robinson EDR and several members of the PAC committee.

Stay Tuned for more information and work days.

Bay Park West Public Workshop
written by Mark Rosenzweig, Advocacy Committee co chair, August 06, 2010
Yesterday, Thursday, August 5th, the BPW Field Workshop took place. It was attended by about a dozen GROC members, a lesser number of non-GROC private citizens and a handful of Parks Dept &/or MCPAC members. Rick Williams, Mark Dunn and Russ Wait gave an excellent walking tour of sections of the park that had been flagged as a demonstration of how sustainable trails are designed and contrasted them to existing trails there that went straight up the fall line, pointing out their prediction for erosion. It is obvious that the GROC trail committee members have done exemplary work to prepare for the pilot project in BPW and Tryon Park. The Parks people with whom I spoke are very pleased with what they have been given and shown. I am optimistic that at the upcoming MCPAC meeting, (tentatively planned for Thursday, August 26, 4 p.m., venue not yet announced), that the go ahead to begin trail work will be given. It is vital that GROC has strong attendance at that meeting to support all our efforts to date and to answer any last minute questions or concerns.
