GROC Gives Youth Action Committee
GROC Gives, Inc., Rochester, NY
How is your project making your community healthier, and why should it win?
GROC Gives will partner with the Rochester City School District, the Greater Rochester YMCA and others to create the GROC Gives Youth Action Committee. Youth Action Committee members will help GROC Gives and its partners develop and implement mountain and road bicycling opportunities for at-risk, urban youth. Founded by Genesee Regional Off-Road Cyclists, GROC Gives seeks to improve community health and fitness through mountain biking, with special emphasis on at-risk youth living in the City of Rochester.
More than half of the city’s children live in poverty, and the schools are among the lowest-performing in the nation. GROC Gives will create a 2014 Youth Action Committee comprised of 8 city high school students. We will equip and train the students to mentor 7th and 8th grade students at School No. 19. The Committee will help GROC Gives plan and implement programs, including skills clinics and field trips to local mountain bike trails. Participants will learn on-and off-road bicycling skills, safety and etiquette; trail stewardship; and nutrition. The Committee will also help organize a school-wide (K-8) observation of National Bike to School Day. Committee members will receive stipends, and 10 participants will receive scholarships to our summer educational mountain bike program.
