The Town of Penfield recently was awarded a Genesee Transportation Council Grant to study the feasibility of using this corridor for non-motorized commuter and recreational opportunities. The Town of Penfield is lead agent on this project and will bring into the study feedback from residents in Penfield, Brighton and the City of Rochester. This study will then produce documents that will allow for funding opportunities to further develop the project. The concept here is to provide feedback on the main trail as well as diversify the experience by providing various types of sustainable multiple-use trails along the corridor as well. This is also a great example of and area that consists of both Green and Blue Trails with Irondequoit Creek being the central focus of the project. If you live in Penfield, Brighton or the City of Rochester and want to get involved and be kept informed please click here.
Schedule for this project
- Steering Committee formed to guide this process (Member Rick Williams has been appointed to the Steering Committee)
- First meeting of the Steering Committee will discuss scope of project
- Steering Committee and Environmental Design & Research hired to design and work on the feasibility and documents will start to determine upcoming public input process, agenda and calendar.
- Public input and meetings to hear from residents and citizens (very important to have our input at meetings and public input process) expected late Fall 2007

Here is the lastest update reagrding this corridor and project. Now that the plan has been completetd it will be up to local governments, Monroe County Parks (largest land tracts through Ellison) and private land acquisitions to allow this to move ahead. This alternative transportation and recreational corridor are the focus of many cities. This project is a major connectivity piece for hiking, biking, commuting that by urging your local decisionmakers to push ahead, federal stimulus money, a greenway corridor and healh benefits via human powered activity this could happen. Local governments and decisionmakers need to be made aware of this..Thanks

Just had a steering committee meeting regarding the Irondequoit Creek Corridor. The plans were also shown at last thursdays Monroe County Parks Master Plan Public hearing. This makes total sense since the corridor is 2/3 in the County Park land. The trail corridor has been divided into 4 phases. Panorama Plaza to Ellison Park, Ellison Park South to Blossom Road, Blossom Road to Browncroft Blvd and finally Browncroft Blvd to Empire Blvd. The last section presents the bulk of the difficulty and projected expense. There should be a public hearing regarding this project towards the end of July. I'll keep you posted.

Just a quick update regarding the Ellison/Irondequoit Bay Parkland 5-Year Master Plan. For those of you who attended or have seen PCTV coverage of the Irondequoit Creek Corridor public meeting on November 27th you were presented with an in-depth look at the area by Tom Robinson at ED&R Landscape Architects and Land Planers. Since this is the main corridor through the County Parklands involved in the upcoming 5-year master plan, the study is an integral part of the forward moving Monroe County initiative. Tom Robinson has been awarded the contract for the Countys' 5-Year Master Plan and this dovetails perfectly with the current Irondequoit Creek Corridor. This is the plan that will address various user groups, access and the secondary and tertiary trails. As was stated by many of the speakers at the November 27th meeting this is an opportunity to communicate, discuss, break down barriers, educate and partner with other user groups as well as Monroe County.
Now that the consultant has been chosen a steering committee will be formed and all important public meetings, comment periods, interaction with officials and letters will commence. We as a user group and advcocates for multiple-use trails will need to be engage the process in as many ways as possible. Please check back as this unfolds and information becomes available on the details and schedule. Call your local representative and encourage an inclusive process with all user groups.
