While we certainly are excited about the incredible progress that has already been realized at Irondequoit Bay Park West and Tryon Park, GROC volunteers are also diligently laboring to maintain and improve Dryer Road Park. This park gets the bulk of all trail riding and is always at risk of being loved to death. Rick Williams and Victor Gaspar have led work parties through the fall on various Saturdays and also Thursday mornings. Most recent work parties were:
- Sunday, Oct. 31— Sixteen workers cleared leaves off all the trails in the park with leaf blowers and rakes
- Thursday, Nov. 4— At the skills area, eight volunteers cleaned up all the left-over wood scraps, removed the temporary construction fencing, telephone poles and the extra bridging sections, relocating them to the top field so that they can be used on trails as needs arise.
- Thursday, Nov. 11—Six early risers skidded a telephone pole section down CMP and used it to replace the rotted log on the drop-off. They also removed a log feature on Humpty that wasn’t felt to be “working”—sorry, Rick. Then they smoothed out the steep switchback corner on Black Widow.
The Thursday morning work parties have become a somewhat regularly recurrent event through the riding season, each one focused on one or two projects each day. Otherwise specific workdays soliciting larger groups, with themes such as “Prune in June” or the recent leaf removal day are held on weekends.
We all need to remember that as we create more venues for mountain biking, we have to each commit ourselves to consider it our responsibility to volunteer for their maintenance.
Respectfully submitted,
Mark Rosenzweig, Advocacy Committee Co-chair

We had over 25.5 volunteers at the Oct 9th Bay Park West work day (we count even the sleepy ones in back packs). There was a great deal of benching trail and clearing done and trails are really coming together. We also had a nice treat for our volunteers donated by Forge Racing (aka Homewood crew) and Little Venice Pizzeria who donated pizza for all of our volunteer crew. Please vote for Little Venice for best of Rochester at the City Newspaper web site.
