GROC Continues its great partnership with Ontario County Park

Sample Image
GROC has been working over the last 2 years with Ontario County Park to build and maintain trails on Gannet Hill. These trails have been  a huge success bringing new campers and travelers to the park to enjoy their awesome facilities and enjoy the great share-use trails. The latest project between Ontario County Parks and GROC is working to build a new  ADA compliant Observation Deck.
Two weekends ago during a trail work day GROC members disassembled the previous non-compliant stairway. OCP staff worked on the decks substrate and this Wednesday evening 15 of us decked and railed this awesome project...check it out..

Thanks Rick Williams for organizing and managing the volunteers

This is all about volunteers helping in our parks. The more we open our parks to shared-use the more people will become involved in being stewards of our park lands.

Thanks Ontario County for allowing us to participate and work with you on improving and expanding the use of our parks.

Pick Up the Parks Thank you and Summary

Sample Image
The 1st annual Pick Up the Parks Project was a great success due to the great planning committee and the tremendous turnout of volunteers.  We had about 250 volunteers overall between the 4 park sites.  Thank you all for your donation of time, energy, and care for your Monroe County Parks.  They're one of our best "quality of life" resources in our area, and we sincerely appreciate you becoming stewards of the parks.  We'll be sure to let you know about future events of this nature.

Thanks to the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services, as well as the individual Park Supervisors for their management of the trash.

Thanks to Genesee Regional Off-Road Cycling club (GROC), Genesee Valley Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK), The Rochester Regional Group of the Sierra Club, and the GeoRoc Geocaching club for being our site hosts for the day.

Thanks also to the Water Education Collaborative (WEC), Imagine It Fundraising through Recycling, International Coastal Cleanup, Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley, and the Wilson Outdoor Club for their assistance putting this event on as well.

Thanks to Wegmans for their donation towards refreshments, and to GROC for providing refreshments for Ellison Park volunteers.

And finally, thanks to the 250 volunteers that picked up 3,000 pounds of trash, and tabulated about 600+ human-hours!

12 pounds of trash per person.

750 pounds of trash per park.

That's about the same weight as an average car.

GROC announces The Dirt Betty Ride Series, Season II

Sample Image

Background:  There are many women of all ages who want to mountain bike, but find themselves intimidated or otherwise put off and uncomfortable riding with their husband, boyfriend, partner or even with other women of higher ability.  Because of this we started a group ride for women last season.  It was a tremendous success, with as many as 19 riders per session.

Goal: Provide a fun mountain biking experience for women

Target Group: Novice to Intermediate

Format:Sample Image
•  Organized, but informal, one-hour ride as a way to share information on trails and riding technique, in a non-threatening and supportive atmosphere

•  We will have women volunteers who have riding experience and familiarity with the trails, who will ride with the groups as facilitators

Location: Dryer Road Park

Schedule: Once a month, Monday evening

Meet at 5:45 p.m. near gazebo, get organized and start ride promptly at 6:00 p.m.

Dates:
May 17
June 14
July 12
August 16
September 13
October 4

We will break out into groups by ability, matched to  appropriate trails and pace˜No girl will be left behind during the ride!!

What to Bring:
• Bike—one that is appropriate for riding on dirt.
• Helmet—absolutely mandatory
• Water
• Consider eye protection, elbow, knee, shin pads, gloves, bug repellant

How to join in:
• No fee and no membership required
•  Before each ride that you are going to attend, please let the coordinator, Mary Lee, know.  Also, let her know your ability level, so that she has an idea of group size and distribution

We need to  know who and how many women are going to attend, so that we can plan for the  right number of facilitators

Looking For People To Ride With?

A new group meet-up website for ALL skill levels has been put together so everyone can make some new friends and ride with others at their skill level.

RochesterMTB.com http://www.RochesterMTB.com  is new way for you and your family to join in on a group setting and ride with other riders at your skill level.  I first want everyone to know that this is a group for any level rider, whether your a beginner that has never been on a single track trail before or a race oriented log hopper, we will have a meet-up scheduled for you.  The great thing about this type of group meet-up is how easy it will be to make new friends and ride with them whenever you can.

How it works:  Go to http://www.RochesterMTB.com and become a member of our group.  "Membership is FREE!"  View our calendar of scheduled events and RSVP for the event you would like to attend.  At the event we will generally meet 'n greet at a specific location and and break off into smaller groups usually by skill level.  You ride, become friends, go home and check your calendar because you can't wait to do it all over again!

I know many of us have searched for a way to make some new friends at our level and ride with them when we can.  I myself spent way to many days riding alone and wished I could find a way to meet others to ride with.  This is that way!  I'm sure we will have other types of meet-ups and events though-out the season to keep it fun and exciting.  Events like group picnic's, camp overs, instructional demos, advanced rides, etc...

So head on over to www.RochesterMTB.com http://www.RochesterMTB.com   and get in on the fun!
We're looking forward to seeing you on the trails!

Group Organizer,
Shone Rowley
